It's not getting any warmer yet in Belgium, so another coat project was necessary for my sanity :)
In the past, I made 2 other wool coats, a cashmere coat and a white wool coat. Of course one can never have enough wool coats so I had to make one also in black!

Inspiration:
My inspiration was again from the 50s Balenciaga designs. I wanted a fitted silhouette but still comfortable so that I can move in it freely.
Pattern making:
I used the basic coat foundation, and adapted the pattern to achieve the desired look for this coat. Here is a video I posted on Instagram showing the process. I did a lot of alterations and once I was confident about the pattern, I cut the main fabric and continued the sewing process.
Sewing:
Wool fabric is a popular choice for coats because it is warm, durable, and easy to work with. I chose a wool fabric that is appropriate for the type of coat I wanted to make. It has a heavier weight for the heavy winter we experience now in Belgium. The fabric was a designer deadstock fabric that I got in the sales from the fabric sales.
First step of sewing is to cut out your pattern pieces. Lay out your fabric and carefully cut out the pattern pieces, following the grain line indicated on the pattern. Make sure to transfer any markings, such as dart points or buttonhole placement, onto the fabric.
The next step is to sew the darts. Darts are used to shape the fabric and create a fitted silhouette. Sew the darts in the front and back pieces of the coat, following the markings you transferred onto the fabric.
Then you can start the assembly of the coat. Start by sewing the shoulder and side seams of the coat. Then, attach the lining to the coat, right sides together, and sew the lining and coat together at the neckline and hem.
Finally attach the sleeves. Sew the sleeves to the coat, attaching them to the armholes.
Finish the hem: Hem the bottom of the coat by folding the fabric under and sewing it in place.
Final look:
I hope you enjoy the project!
